I understand mobile is more valuable in terms of business, it’s cooler, it’s a growing industry.
But wired infrastructures are important as well, and it’s not very smart stop working and improving them.
Until 2010 in Italy mobile connections cost was unreachable (read here,in Italian, some personal experiments from 2001 to 2010) while since 2011, with some deep breath and a fine search it’s possible to find out some offers at least affordable as quality/price ratio.
But what is the sense of all talk from politicians/gurus/commentators/economists/entrepreneurs/technicians/massmediologists/experts turning over the microphone if I loose 1 Kb of band in wired infrastructure for every 1 Kb of band gained in mobility?
Just to make an example of comparison of speeds (just as an empiric experience, with no ambition of statistical value):
Year 2006
Mobile Connection (GPRS):
- average download speed in the range 50-100 Kbps
- upload speed so low to risk no to be measurable in Kbps
Home ADSL connection:
- average download speed about 3580 Kbps
- average upload speed about 800 Kbps
Year 2012
Mobile Connection (UMTS):
- average download speed about 2437 Kbps
- average upload speed about 1792 Kbps
Home ADSL connection:
- average download speed about 1402 Kbps
- average upload speed about 235 Kbps
